“You yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
1 Peter 2:5
In a recent Bible study, I had read about Jesus being the Cornerstone of the church, our hearts being His dwelling place and our lives being living stones. A living stone. It’s an interesting image that conjures up life, strength, endurance and the concept of being used as part of something bigger. In the Bible, stones were used to build, not so much bricks or wood. If you wanted to make something last, you used stone.
But I have also spent time with my children building bridges and dams out of stones that were odd shaped, uneven and difficult to piece together. The end product was not a mason’s dream and made for a wobbly walk to cross that bridge.
We are living stones if we have Christ in our hearts. Each day we are determining what kind of stone we are going to be. Are we going to be a stone of strength and support or one of unbalanced proportions? We are each a part of a great work in the Kingdom of God and we are each able to determine whether His cause is going to be stronger by our being a part of it, or weaker. We determine this by our daily actions, decisions, character and integrity. It’s determined by the big decisions and the little ones.
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus , the aurthor and finisher of our faith,” Hebrews 12:1-2
“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ,” Philippians 1:6
